Waterproof Flooring: What It Really Means (And What It Doesn't)

Scroll through any flooring website and you'll see "waterproof" slapped on almost everything. LVP? Waterproof. Laminate? Waterproof. Carpet tiles? Somehow also waterproof. But what does "waterproof" actually mean — and more importantly, what doesn't it cover?

Waterproof vs. Water-Resistant

These two terms get used interchangeably, but they mean different things:

  • Water-resistant: Can handle occasional splashes and spills if cleaned up promptly. Water sitting for extended periods will eventually cause damage.
  • Waterproof (surface): The plank or tile itself won't absorb water — ever. You could submerge it in a bathtub and it would be fine.
  • Waterproof (installed floor): This is the tricky one. Even with waterproof planks, water can seep between seams and get underneath, potentially causing mold or subfloor damage.

What "Waterproof Core" Really Means

When a product like Timeless Designs LVP says "waterproof," they mean the core material won't swell, warp, or degrade when exposed to water. SPC (Stone Polymer Composite) and WPC (Wood Polymer Composite) cores are both waterproof. Traditional HDF laminate cores are not — they're wood-based and will swell.

The Seam Question

Here's what most marketing won't tell you: click-lock joints are not watertight. If you spill a glass of water and wipe it up in a few minutes, no problem. But a burst pipe that floods your kitchen for hours? Water will find its way between the planks and under the floor. No floating floor is a submarine.

What This Means for You

  • Kitchens & bathrooms: Waterproof core flooring (SPC or WPC vinyl) is an excellent choice. Daily splashes and spills are no concern at all.
  • Basements: Waterproof core is essential. But also address any moisture issues in the concrete first — no floor can fix a wet basement.
  • Laundry rooms: Waterproof core, and consider putting a drip tray under the washer for extra protection.
